Stop Predicting. Start Selecting.

July 28th, 2026

Think about your last losing trade. Did you know, a second after the click, that you shouldn’t have taken it? That question opened Walter Lesicar’s live session for Flow.42 Analytics, and it set up an idea that fits in four words: stop predicting, start selecting.

Walter is the founder of Flow.42 Analytics and the creator of the Flow.42 Trading Suite for NinjaTrader 8. He’s been trading since 2001 and using NinjaTrader since 2008, and his argument has little to do with calling the next move. It’s about a conditions-first approach: before you hunt for an entry, decide whether the current market is even worth your attention.

Why most traders act at the wrong moment

Most traders, Walter argues, are not bad at reading a chart. They lose because they act at the wrong time. They trade chop as if it were a trend and a thin market as if it were a liquid one. They trade because the chart is moving, not because conditions are good.

He described a familiar morning. It is 9:40 am ET and the E-mini S&P 500 (ES) is moving fast. The candles are big, so you take a trade and lose a little. You trade again to make it back and fall further behind. By 10:15 am you’re frustrated and mentally done, and when the real move finally arrives at 10:30 am, you have nothing left. The enemy is overtrading and acting before conditions justify the risk. As Jesse Livermore observed long ago, the big money was made not by thinking but by sitting tight.

The fix, Walter says, is not more willpower. It’s better information at the moment of decision, a clear read on whether conditions are clean or simply not worth it right now.

A conditions-first approach: the four-step Flow.42 framework

Flow.42 organizes every decision into four steps: conditions, energy, pressure, and execution. First, check conditions; if the market is choppy or thin, stop there. Second, look for energy, and ask whether real participation is building or price is only drifting. Third, confirm pressure, and ask whether buyers or sellers are genuinely in control or the move is running on fumes. Fourth, execute cleanly, with your own plan and risk management.

The sequence is the point: context first, pressure second, execution last. When the four steps line up, you have a reason to be in the market. When they don’t, you wait.

Protect Mode: an objective filter, not a prediction engine

At the center of the suite is Protect Mode, which Walter is careful to describe accurately. It does not try to predict the next tick or the next move. It’s a conditions filter that warns you when the market environment is poor and your participation may not be worth the risk.

He’s just as clear about its limits. Protect Mode will not skip only your losing trades; no filter can. The goal is not perfection but trading less in low-quality conditions, where losses tend to cluster and the financial and emotional damage compound together. Flagging those stretches can turn a vague urge to trade into a clear call: conditions are not worth my risk right now.

Six tools, two questions

The Flow.42 Trading Suite includes six tools, and Walter frames them around two questions: are conditions worth your attention, and who is in control? The first three tools read context. VolDrive shows the volume trend and price energy, ChopState flags sideways conditions, and the Volume Liquidity Meter shows whether the market is thick or thin.

The other three read pressure. Wall Dynamics reads the tape for absorption, where aggressive orders are soaked up without moving price, and exhaustion, where a push runs out of fuel, and it marks volume surges. Volume Balance weighs aggressive buying against aggressive selling. Wall Spike highlights sudden bursts of participation. Together, the three answer whether a move has real support behind it.

Seeing it on real NinjaTrader 8 charts

Walter closed on live NinjaTrader 8 charts, walking through gold and the Nasdaq 100 (NQ). Gold made the case well. As an ultra-thin instrument, it’s hard to trade, and the suite marked long stretches of gray, sideways candles from VolDrive and the chop state. The takeaway was blunt and useful: stop, do not trade here, be cautious.

Key takeaways

  • Decide whether conditions are worth trading before you look for an entry; selection beats prediction.
  • Most losses come from acting in poor conditions, not from misreading the chart.
  • The Flow.42 framework runs in four steps: conditions, energy, pressure, and execution.
  • Protect Mode is an objective conditions filter, not a signal generator, and it will not catch every losing trade.
  • The six tools answer two questions: are conditions worth your attention (VolDrive, ChopState, Volume Liquidity Meter), and who is in control (Wall Dynamics, Volume Balance, Wall Spike)?
